Like many, the team at KHOOB Studio is stoked for 2024. It's an exciting time for designers, especially with the advent of AI as well as new interfaces (eg. AR/VR thanks to Apple Vision Pro). So like every year, we had to poll our Principals to see what they think the trends for 2024 in UI will be here in India and beyond. Enjoy.

The Throwback

We’re in an era of retro revival, guided by Gen Z’s ability to modernize 20th-century influences. This trend incorporates a mix of 1990s grunge, 1980s new wave, and 1970s disco, utilizing collage-like graphics, bright color palettes, and vintage typefaces. Referential design combines the nostalgia of the past with today’s UI design, creating experiences that feel both familiar and fresh, with Bollywood motifs serving as just one example of cultural integration.

AI Personification

Digital interfaces are becoming more engaging and human-like through AI’s capacity for real-time image, audio, and video generation. This trend leverages AI to create interfaces that adapt dynamically to user interactions, making digital experiences feel more personal and responsive.

Expressive Typography

Typography becomes a central element in UI design, with an emphasis on claymation, metals, and tangible or tactile fonts that make typefaces more emotive and expressive. As design serves as the vehicle for content, enriching narratives and compelling brand engagement, typography acts as the driver. With a focus on accessibility and legibility, we’re seeing sans-serifs get bolder and serifs embrace scripts and italics, creating striking contrasts on full-screen hero banners. Expect bubbled, mixed-weight, and chrome-glazed lettering to catch users' eyes.

Minimalistic and Intuitive Interfaces for Utility

Emphasizing designs that reduce cognitive load, this trend champions clean, fast-loading interfaces that simplify user interactions, particularly for e-commerce and fintech platforms, where clarity and efficiency are paramount. This approach not only facilitates a more streamlined navigation experience but also enhances user satisfaction by minimizing frustration and confusion. By prioritizing functionality and ease of use, minimalistic and intuitive interfaces cater to the growing demand for digital solutions that users can operate effortlessly, making complex processes feel straightforward and manageable.

Chat and Voice-Based UIs Gain Popularity

Reflecting a global move towards more accessible digital services, chat and voice-based interfaces are becoming increasingly prevalent, driven by the rapid advancements in AI-led interactions that seamlessly blend text and voice chat. This trend acknowledges the pivotal role of natural language processing in multiple languages, with a particular focus on India’s linguistic diversity.

Real-Time UI Generation with AI

The advent of AI enables the dynamic generation of UIs based on immediate user data and requirements. This concept of "fluid UI" allows for the creation of customized apps and websites in real-time, offering tailored digital experiences that adapt to user needs instantly.

Light Colour Palettes with Neon Accents

As we transition away from the dark mode trend, a preference for lighter backgrounds punctuated with neon coloUr highlights emerges, bringing back the vibrancy of the 1980s but with a modern twist suited for today's digital environments. ColoUr, being one of the initial elements a user notices, plays a crucial role in UI designs that are increasingly leaning towards sensory engagement. Vibrant hues serve as an effective tool to captivate attention and guide users through different sections of an app or website. This trend not only nods to the referential design ethos with its retro neon comeback but also sees gradients evolving.

Spatial UI for AR and VR

The year 2024 is marked by a groundbreaking shift in digital experiences, driven by the introduction of devices like the Apple Vision Pro. This technological leap is spurring a wave of design innovation in spatial UI, poised to revolutionize AR and VR interactions. Designers are embracing new opportunities for creative expression within digital spaces, where the nonphysical becomes tangible. This trend is characterized by a focus on adding realism to digital experiences through the integration of three-dimensional elements and iridescent glowing effects, reminiscent of an airbrushed, glass-like finish.
